You stand at the back of the court. You see the ball. You swing harder than you have all night. The ball drops three meters short. You swing softer on the next one and it rockets past your opponent into the back glass. Both swings felt the same in your hand. They were not the same swing.
The padel swing is the most under-studied piece of equipment on a padel court, and it is the only one you cannot buy. Most of the racket-head speed an amateur generates comes from a sequence that starts three seconds before the ball arrives, in their feet. The rest comes from the order in which the body wakes up. Reverse the order or skip a link, and the racket arrives at the ball with the energy of a polite handshake.

This guide names them, explains the physics that drives the padel swing inside a cage, and shows you the seven-link kinetic chain that turns a tense shoulder into a clean strike. By the end you will know why your forehand sometimes flies and why, on the very next point, it dies.
- A padel swing is shorter, faster and more sequenced than a tennis swing because the cage compresses time and the second pendulum (forearm and wrist) does disproportionate work.

The padel swing is not a tennis swing
Padel and tennis look like cousins. The biomechanics are closer to second cousins, twice removed. Three structural differences change the swing fundamentally.
The cage compresses time. A padel court is twenty by ten meters, with glass and mesh that bounce balls back into play. The space between you and the next ball is smaller than on a tennis court, and a rebound off the back glass arrives faster than a one-bounce tennis ball. Your backswing has less room and your preparation has less time. The LTA Padel coaching guidance describes volleys as needing a "shorter racket path rather than a full swing," and the logic applies to ground strokes after a wall bounce too.
The racket is shorter and stiffer. A padel racket weighs roughly 350-385 grams (versus 280-320 for a tennis racket) but is about 60 percent the length. Less leverage means less time for energy to travel down the handle, so the swing has to be more efficient per centimeter. A short stroke achieves higher stroke velocity with the same arm energy because angular acceleration depends on radius and timing.
The second pendulum does more work. In tennis, hip and shoulder rotation contribute the lion's share of racket-head speed. In padel the upper-arm pendulum is shortened by the closer contact point and the compact backswing, so the forearm and wrist (the second pendulum) carry a disproportionate share of the final acceleration. This is why a tense wrist hurts a padel forehand more than it hurts a tennis forehand, and why grip pressure is one of the three universal chain-breakers.
The kinetic chain in order, from feet to racket face
If a padel swing were a sentence, the kinetic chain would be its grammar. Six body segments plus the racket fire in a fixed order. Each segment accelerates the next, then decelerates so that energy transfers forward. Sports-medicine literature calls this the "summation of speed" principle, and it applies to every padel stroke from the bandeja to the víbora to a flat forehand off the back glass.
Here are the seven links, in order, with the approximate timing window of each one inside a typical 800-millisecond forehand from preparation to contact.
- Feet plant (T+0 to T+150ms). Outside foot anchors, inside foot points at the side wall, both knees soft. Feet square to the net and the chain has nowhere to start.
- Legs drive (T+150 to T+300ms). Outside leg pushes the ground; front knee bends to receive the transfer. Ground reaction force is the only external energy your swing ever receives.
- Hips rotate (T+300 to T+450ms). Hips lead the upper body by 30-60 milliseconds. The most-broken link in amateur padel. If hips and shoulders rotate together, you have lost half the chain.
- Torso uncoils (T+400 to T+550ms). The trunk rotates after the hips, transferring rotational energy upward. This is what players feel as swinging from the body.
- Shoulders deliver (T+500 to T+650ms). Lead shoulder pulls back, hitting shoulder advances. Internal rotation of the upper arm contributes the largest single share of racket-head speed.
- Forearm and wrist release (T+650 to T+780ms). The second pendulum whips. Wrist firm until just before contact, then releases through the ball. Premature release scrubs speed and tilts the face.
- Racket meets ball (T+780 to T+820ms). Contact slightly ahead of the front hip. Follow-through decelerates the arm safely and prepares the recovery step.
You do not feel seven separate firings. You feel one swing. But when the sequence is intact, the ball comes off the strings with a depth and a sound no isolated body part can produce. When it is broken, the swing feels frantic and the ball feels light.
How racket choice rewards or punishes a clean chain
A racket cannot fix a broken chain. It can, however, hide a small chain leak from your opponent, or it can magnify a clean chain into real power. A 3K carbon frame with a soft EVA core flexes more on contact. The longer dwell time gives the chain ten to twenty milliseconds of extra forgiveness. A 12K carbon frame with a denser core is stiffer. Dwell time is shorter, energy return is sharper, the timing window is tighter. A clean chain feeds straight through the frame and the ball leaves the strings with a flatter, faster trajectory. The wrong-swing trap: three chain-breakers that steal your speed
The three errors below explain why ninety percent of amateurs swing harder than the pros and produce a slower ball. Each one breaks a specific link in the chain, and each one shows up in clusters (where you find one, you usually find the other two).
Chain-breaker 1: the arm-only swing. You see the ball, tense your shoulder, throw your arm at it. Feet, hips and torso do not move. You skipped four of seven links and tried to generate all the energy from the smallest, slowest segments. The ball comes off light, your shoulder is sore the next morning, and you blame your racket. The fix is unglamorous: every preparation begins with a foot pivot and a hip turn, even on shots that feel like emergencies.
Chain-breaker 2: the over-tension grip. The continental grip is the standard for almost every padel stroke (chopper, V between thumb and index on the top bevel). It should be firm enough that the racket does not twist on off-center contact, relaxed enough that the wrist can release through the ball. Most amateurs grip at eight or nine out of ten. The wrist locks. The second pendulum is amputated. The ball comes off as if you were hitting through a pillow. Target a four-to-five baseline pressure, rising briefly to six or seven only at impact. Chain-breaker 3: the late hip rotation. Feet plant, legs drive, then shoulders, arm and racket all fire together because the hips never opened. This is the most common error among intermediate players who understand "use your body" but rotate the trunk as a single block. The fix is a 30-to-60-millisecond hip lead: hips start rotating before the shoulders, and the shoulders catch up. In practice this feels like your belly button points at the side glass an instant before your chest does. Film yourself once and you will see it; if you cannot film, listen to the sound of contact change.
Three drills to rebuild the chain in twenty minutes
Knowing the chain is half the battle. Rewiring it takes practice. The three drills below take five to eight minutes each, fit into a normal warm-up, and each targets a different link in the sequence. Do them in order, two to three times a week, for two weeks. The change is measurable by week three.
Drill 1: Shadow-swing rhythm (5 minutes). Stand in your half of the court without a ball. Take ten slow forehands at 4-out-of-10 effort, counting out loud: "feet, hips, shoulders, racket." Then ten at 6-out-of-10. Then ten at 8-out-of-10. The goal is not power; it is feeling the four checkpoints in the same order at every speed. If the count breaks at higher speed, slow down and rebuild it.
Drill 2: Two-step weight transfer (7 minutes). At the baseline with a partner feeding balls, take exactly two preparation steps before every contact: a small back step (load) and a small forward step (drive). Hit through the ball, then recover. The two-step pattern forces feet, legs and hips to engage before the racket. Common error: the steps happen but the weight does not transfer (back foot stays heavy). Have your partner watch your back heel; it should lift off the ground at contact.
Drill 3: Wall-tap timing (5-8 minutes). Find a wall (back glass or practice wall). Stand close enough that the ball returns to you in less than one second after each tap. Hit compact strokes with a 30-to-40 percent backswing only. The cage compresses your time, so you have no choice but to sequence efficiently. Two-minute sets, rotate forehand and backhand. Brutal at first, addictive once the rhythm clicks.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to rebuild a kinetic chain? Two to four weeks of focused drills produces a noticeable change. Six to eight weeks turns the new sequence into the default under match pressure. The bottleneck is repetition under fatigue, not theory.
Should I change my grip pressure on different shots? Yes. Volleys benefit from a firmer grip (5-6 out of 10), ground strokes and bandejas sit at 4-5 with a brief spike to 6-7 at contact, defensive lobs return to 4. The wrist should never be locked.

Why does my swing feel slower when I try harder? Trying harder usually means tensing the shoulder and grip, which breaks the chain at the second pendulum. The frantic swing feels fast and arrives slow. The fix is to ease grip pressure and trust the sequence.
Is the kinetic chain the same for backhands? The order is the same. Upper-body release differs slightly (lead shoulder rotates instead of hitting shoulder, wrist release more constrained on a one-handed backhand). Seven-link order from feet to racket is universal.
How do I know if my chain is improving without filming myself? Three signals: contact sound becomes more consistent, your shoulder is less tired after a 90-minute match, ball depth varies less between your first forehand and your fortieth.
