Why almost every padel racket is exactly 38 mm
If thickness were a genuine performance dial, you would expect a spread: 34 mm, 36 mm, 38 mm, each tuned for a different player. You do not see that spread, and the reason is manufacturing, not physics.
Padel rackets are built by curing carbon or fibreglass skins around an EVA foam core inside a mould. Those moulds are expensive tooling, and the industry standardised on the 38 mm cavity years ago because it is the legal maximum and it leaves room for a generous core. Retooling a factory to produce a 35 mm or 37 mm frame at scale is a large cost for a change most players would never feel. So brands simply do not do it. The thickness is inherited from the mould, and the mould is 38 mm.
There is one honest exception: 36 mm frames. You find them mostly in junior rackets and some beginner and women's models. But notice what really travels with that thinner profile. Those rackets are also lighter, usually in the 320 to 355 gram range instead of 360 to 375. The player feels the lower weight and the smaller swing, not the two millimetres of profile. Calling a 36 mm racket "thinner" is technically true and practically misleading. It is a lighter racket that happens to be thinner.
The wrong-X trap: what thickness actually changes
This is the trap. A shopper reads "38 mm" and assumes a thicker frame stores more energy and hits harder, the way a thicker diving board launches you higher. Padel does not work like that, because the 38 mm is not a solid slab. It is two thin structural skins with a block of foam between them, and that foam is where the racket's personality lives.
Independent teardowns and playtests keep landing on the same conclusion: how a racket feels comes from the density of the core and the balance point, not the outer thickness. A harder EVA core stores and returns energy fast, so it feels powerful on a clean central hit but punishes off-centre contact with a smaller sweet spot. A softer core spreads contact over more surface, enlarging the sweet spot and adding comfort at the cost of raw punch. That trade lives inside the 38 mm, not in the millimetres themselves.
