Do the arithmetic on your own racket. Three sessions a week at ninety minutes is four and a half hours on court. A week has one hundred and sixty-eight hours. That means your racket spends roughly 3% of its life playing padel and 97% of it sitting somewhere, and the actual ball-contact time is a few minutes of that.
Almost every conversation about padel racket care is about the 3%. How you hit, whether you scrape the frame, how often you catch the wall. Meanwhile the 97% does more damage, in a car boot in August or a freezing garage in January, on days you never took the cover off. That damage is cumulative, invisible until it is permanent, and almost entirely preventable.

The 97% Problem: Where Your Racket Actually Lives
A padel racket is not a solid object. It is a sandwich. A closed-cell EVA foam core sits between two composite faces, usually carbon or fibreglass, held together by an adhesive bond and a moulded frame. Every part responds to temperature and moisture, and the bond is the weakest link in the stack.
That matters because there are two different ways a racket dies, and players tend to think about only one.
The first is fatigue from play. Thousands of impacts compress the foam, the core loses rebound, and the racket goes flat. We covered that in our guide to when a padel racket is actually dead.
The second is environmental damage, and nobody logs it. It does not need you to play at all. It needs a hot boot, a cold garage or a damp bag, and enough repetitions. This article is about that one.
Heat: The Fastest Way to Ruin an EVA Core
The interior of a parked car on a sunny day commonly climbs past 50C, and a closed boot is worse than the cabin because there is no airflow. That is well above anything a racket is designed to sit in.
Two things happen up there. First, the EVA softens. Closed-cell foam holds its rebound because millions of gas-filled cells push back when you compress them, and heat makes the cell walls more pliable, so the foam gives more and returns less. Second, and more seriously, the core and the face expand at different rates, which loads the adhesive bond between them every time the car heats up and cools down overnight.
You do not get a bang. You get a bond that has been worked loose a little at a time, until one ordinary smash finds the weak spot.
What heat damage looks like months later
Thermal damage does not announce itself on the day. It shows up later as a racket that feels flat, a duller or oddly metallic impact sound, more vibration into the forearm, and dead patches where the face no longer responds evenly. In the worst cases you get visible bubbling or a lifted edge.

One honest caveat. You will see a figure repeated around the padel internet that a core lasts twelve to eighteen months at two or three sessions a week. Treat it as a rule of thumb, not a standard, because the sources quoting it do not agree and none publish a method. There is no peer-reviewed padel-specific study on thermal ageing of racket cores. The mechanism is established behaviour for foam and bonded composites, and it is the consensus across padel retailers and specialist magazines, but it is not lab data on a padel racket and we will not dress it up as one.
Cold: The Opposite Problem, and Why It Cracks Frames
Cold does not soften anything. It does the reverse, and the reverse is not automatically safer.
Below roughly 5C, carbon and fibreglass composites stiffen and become more brittle, and the EVA core stiffens with them. On court that means a racket that feels harsh and lifeless, with less trampoline effect, a noticeably smaller usable area on the face, and more vibration reaching your elbow. Structurally, an off-centre hit that the frame would normally absorb has less give to work with, which is why frames crack more readily in winter.
Construction matters here too. A softer build like our TŸR line, with its 3K carbon face and Soft EVA core, keeps more of its comfort in the cold because it starts softer. A stiffer 12K build like the Cøre is designed for power and rigidity, and cold adds stiffness it did not ask for, so it can feel unforgiving on a January morning.
The fix costs nothing. Bring the racket indoors overnight instead of leaving it in the car or garage, and if it has been somewhere cold, give it about thirty minutes at room temperature before hitting anything hard. Do not rush that with a radiator, because a fast temperature swing puts exactly the differential stress on the bond that you are trying to avoid.
Sweat, Damp and the Bag Nobody Opens
The third factor is the least dramatic and the most routine. You finish a session, the grip is soaked, the racket goes into the bag, and the bag stays zipped by the door until Thursday.
Two things go wrong in there. The grip and the handle underneath stay wet, which degrades both far faster than play does. And moisture sitting against the frame finds its way into micro-cracks and paint chips, where it works into the composite and speeds up delamination from the inside. Damp alone is slow. Damp plus the heat cycling of a car is considerably faster.
This is the easiest habit to fix and the one most people skip. Unzip the bag when you get home, wipe the face and frame with a dry cloth, and let the grip air properly. If the grip is past saving, replace it. A worn overgrip is a consumable and costs a fraction of what it protects.
The Storage Routine That Actually Works
Here is the whole thing in one table. Four conditions, what each does, the sign it has already happened, and the fix.

Does a thermal bag actually solve the car problem?
Partly, and the limit is worth stating. A padded or insulated bag slows the rate at which heat reaches the racket, which helps for the twenty minutes between the club car park and your front door. It does not stop the racket reaching ambient temperature if the car sits in the sun for three hours. Insulation buys time, it does not create a different climate.
Where should I store a padel racket at home?
Anywhere dry, out of direct sunlight, at normal indoor room temperature. A cupboard, a shelf, or the bag itself as long as it is open and the racket is dry. Avoid sunlit window sills, radiators, and unheated garages or sheds, which swing hot in summer and freezing in winter.
Can I still play with a racket that was left in a hot car?
Usually yes, and one incident is unlikely to write off a racket. The problem is repetition, because damage accumulates across dozens of heat cycles rather than arriving in one. Let it return to room temperature, then watch feel and sound over the next few sessions. If it turns dull or develops dead patches, run the tap test.
